More than 100 golfers enjoyed warm sunshine and some excellent golfing at Wrag Barn Golf Club near Swindon to show their support for the work of CALM, the Swindon based charity that looks after families who have a child with cancer or leukaemia.

The Mayor of Swindon councillor Stan Pajak supported the event, and golfers especially enjoyed the arrival of Melinda Messenger to tee off the afternoon competition and to chat to some of the players over lunch. She made it clear that as a Swindon mum she was very keen to help the work of CALM, which made her appreciate her good fortune as the mother of two healthy boys.

Her gift of a signed bikini was the highlight of a very successful auction, and the day as a whole boosted CALMs funds by a magnificent £4,500.

Amongst the 100 golfers who took part was local player Martin Sell, runner up to the Spanish winner of the British Amateur Masters in late June. In addition to the excellent facilities made available by Wrag Barn golf club, many local companies donated prizes and raffle items. The De Vere Hotel were again the main sponsor, providing the first prize of a round of golf at the famous Belfry course.

Next years event, which Melinda plans to support again, will be on Thursday 19 June 2003 and CALM would welcome early enquiries from teams or individuals who might want to play. Contact Helen Willstead at [email protected] or on 01672 841098.

o CALM is a local charity for the Swindon health area only, run totally voluntarily for the last 18 years by parents. None of the funds raised are spent on salaries or office accommodation - everything goes to help the children and their families. CALM supports around fifteen children on treatment for cancer or leukaemia at any one time, and the charity aims to support the whole family, both during treatment and in the stressful period after treatment ends or after bereavement.
