Learning Curve supports CALM

A day of mayhem at a nursery has proved to be a huge success in raising money for charity.

The Learning Curve Day Nursery, in Wootton Bassett, held its second Midsummer Mayhem family fun day in July.

The event raised more than £1,000 for CALM - the Swindon Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Movement, - and the impressive sum was handed over to the charity yesterday.

Director Alan Butler said each year a committee of parents decide which local charity to support through the money raised.

"The fun day was great, we had lots more people who came along and enjoyed themselves this year and spent lots of money so we were able to raise more than the year before," he said.

"Each year we choose a different local charity that has a connection with children in some way because, after all, we are a nursery.

"Everyone was very keen to support CALM. We had a discussion about supporting national charities but we decided this one would be great to support children locally."

Last year, the nursery, which has 90 children on its books, held its first open day and raised in the region of £500 for Greatwood Horse Power, a project in Marlborough which enables children with special needs to interact with horses.

This year, the event was bigger than before, with stalls and cake sales as well as vintage fire engines, a portrait photographer, and a fancy dress parade with the best costumes being chosen by the town's mayor, Mary Champion.
